I had spotted this article in The Guardian about a community group in Birmingham that had come together back in 2022 when some disgusting far right literature started coming through the letter boxes of people in the neighbourhood.
I loved what they were doing, quite simply coming together as a community to fight back against these haters,.
I reached out to the founder of organisation, who for intimidation reasons goes by the name Mus, to see if she would come on the Win Happy podcast to talk about her life and career and the work of the organisation.
Thankfully she agreed and we had a wonderful conversation, which opened my eyes as to the challenges of being different and how far some people will go to demonstrate their hatred.
For Mus this hate campaign was all of the racist bullying of her childhood raising its ugly face again, this time by a group called The Patriotic Alternative.
Mus nervously reached out to her predominantly white neighbours through the WhatsApp group, and to her immense relief she realised that they were as disgusted as she was about this spreading of hate.
A few conversations later, this community came together and quickly removed the oxygen from the haters and started the group Brummies United Against Racism and Hate Crime.
On the podcast Mus shares the heartbreaking stories of racism experienced throughout her life, the impact that these have had on her, how it has shaped her career and in particular how the work of Brummies United has evolved.
Unfortunately, fear of others is a currency that some politicians prey on and we also spoke about the worrying rise of Nigel Farage and his Reform Party in the UK.
If you get a chance you might listen to the podcast – we need to stop the haters!!
