Interesting Stories and Cracking the Code of a Happy Life

July 1, 2025

One of our special, simple treats is a visit to the Schull Country Market in West Cork on Sunday mornings, which runs from April until September each year from 10 in the morning until 2pm.

The market isn’t very large, with about 14 stall holders selling their wares including everything from jewellery, art, games, soaps, candles, skincare products, coffee and tasty treats. There is a simple criteria for this market whereby the stall holders must manufacture 80% of what they sell.

When the weather is on your side (and even if it isn’t!) we park near the cemetery on the Colla Road that overlooks the harbour. We bring the two dogs for a walk on a little circuit, through the cemetery, down to the shore watching the boats and people swimming and then on the path that leads you back to the quayside and the market nearby.

A cup of coffee, some cheeses, fresh bread and tasty treats are bought for lunch and there is always time to browse the stalls at the market.

The atmosphere is always very relaxing as people in holiday mode mull around and I always say if you could bottle the special atmosphere at the market you would make a fortune.

On one particular sunny Sunday morning the lovely woman at the Little Red Skincare stall spotted our two dogs dragging me in different directions as Dee was trying to buy something. She gave me a bright sympathetic smile, I made some comment about the gorgeous day and she said something about much she loved being there. Somehow I knew she did.

Dee was delighted with her purchases and I couldn’t stop thinking about the very friendly woman who had served us with her warm smile and that really happy aura. What was her story I wondered, and maybe she might make an interesting podcast guest?

A quick search on Mr Google a few days later brought me to the website, a request to come on the podcast and gladly, Fiona Burke accepted my invitation.

Not only was Fiona the founder and owner of Little Red Skincare, but as usual she came with a really interesting story. Our simple conversation about her very special business opened up into a number of areas I wasn’t at all expecting.

She chatted about her early life as the daughter of the local policeman in Ennis, being bullied out of her job as an engineer by someone who felt that wasn’t the place for a woman and this leading to an unplanned life of a successful entrepreneur selling cheese at various markets around Cork.

The cheese business evolved into Little Red Skincare, an organically certified business that can be purchased online, in various stockists, or even better, in person from Fiona at Bantry, Skibbereen and Schull markets.

She also chatted about some big personal changes that she has made recently and how she has cracked the code of this thing we call life!

If you would like to listen to Fiona’s story on the Win Happy podcast click here and even better pop down to Schull in West Cork on a Sunday morning and meet her in person!

From Lead Guitar to Leading a Luxury Brand!!

May 6, 2025

I was more than surprised at the Cork Chamber annual dinner this year that the General Manager of  Mercedes-Benz sitting next to me, Liam Mullane was also a hard rock guitar hero!!

After a couple of hours of exchanging polite corporate pleasantries over a couple of drinks and roast beef, we got down to the real business and quite accidentally discovered our mutual love of rock music.

I think I told him that I found these formal events to be quite boring and that my best time ever in that very hall was to see a Thin Lizzy gig (my first convert ever!!) in 1980.

With surprising enthusiasm he told me that his favourite guitarist was Gary Moore who actually played with Thin Lizzy and from there the conversation took off.

In truth we never really know who we are talking to and what their background is – as well as listening to wonderful stories about the world of luxury car sales, I also heard about his rock and roll dreams and when big decisions needed to be made, and how sadly these dreams had to be put in the back burner.

He now runs a prestigious business but he still plays his guitar.

The next time you are sitting next to someone at a corporate function, never make an assumption that you know their story!

The chat that night was so interesting I asked Liam to guest on my Win Happy podcast so you could hear it also.

Whether you want to learn some sales tips from an expert or you want to listen to a passionate guitarist talking about music, this podcast is worth a listen!

Sally Smart – Living her life her way!

August 27, 2024

On the latest #WinHappy podcast I chatted with Sally Smart of Smart Productions in Schull in West Cork.

We sat in her workshop which was a large room sitting above the ground floor theatre area, known to many kids as “The Loft”.

This is where Sally paints, plans the different productions, where the kids are invited to build the sets and bring their ideas to life on the stage below.

While the whole place feels a bit chaotic you feel that it is a creative space where kids can freely experiment and express themselves.

I can honestly say that Sally is one of the most fascinating people that I have met who has lived the most unusual life and I was gripped by her story. Her mother wanted her family to live simply and sustainably from the land in their Cornwall home and her father was a complex character who suffered from severe mood swings that clearly impacted the family and Sally.

Frustrated by a world that supressed her creativity Sally “ran” away to Australia, she lived alone on a deserted island for 9 months, she fell in love with Gus, an Aboriginal man. They lived and travelled together with their children across the desert in the station wagon that she had bought with their two children. She made clothes to earn income along the way.

Sally is headstrong and determined and she lives and stands by her principles in everything that she does.

In part 1 you can hear the first part of her story as well as the racism she experienced in Australia and the personal risks that she took in her early days travelling and living alone.

Part 1 – Sally Smart escapes to a deserted island for 9 months!

Sally returned to Cornwall for family reasons and to work through some of the trauma that she had experienced in her early life. This resulted in the end of her marriage.

Instead of settling down, typical Sally bought a camper van and took off around Europe with her three girls – she continued to make and sell clothes. She home schooled her children with visiting interesting places being part of that education.

28 years ago she visited a friend in West Cork with her three daughters in the camper van that they were all living in. For the sake of the children Sally decided to put down roots and after many years she was able to explore her own passion for theatre and productions.

Six years ago Sally’s vision was realised and created a safe place called “The Loft”, where with her help kids can express themselves creatively, in a way that she was never able to.

Ayoola Smart

Ayoola, her own daughter, who is now a successful actress was one of the very first to benefit from Sally’s teaching, spirit and encouragement. They are now collaborating on a number of interesting projects.

Sally’s perspective on children and the need for creativity in their development is very interesting and what she is doing is so valuable. Away from parents in a safe environment she provides all of the children with an opportunity to get involved, have fun and learn.

We wish her luck and hope she can hold onto “The Loft” as it is a lot more than a warehouse in the middle of a West Cork village.

In part two you can hear the wonderful Sally Smart chatting about her West Cork adventure.

Part 2 – Sally Smart on the importance of children being able to freely express themselves

A love of QPR, and a very non doom and gloom COVID19 economic perspective with Economist, Jim Power

March 30, 2020

Jim Power Economist

This week I had the pleasure of featuring economist Jim Power on my Win Happy podcast.

While COVID19 and the effect this would have on the Irish and World economy were big parts of the discussion, as always I wanted to dig a little deeper to find out about the person behind the expertise.

Jim spoke about his love of the land, which comes from his very happy life growing up in a farm in Waterford. While he would have loved to have stayed farming his career took a different path.

We chatted about why he gave up his “soulless” role in Bank of Ireland, his passion for Irish food and his concerns about the food supply chain, his role as Chairman of ‘Love Irish Food’, the other work that he does, his love of QPR and of course his passion for all things “Waterford”.

We did talk about the COVID19 crisis in detail and the advice he would give to the government to navigate its way through the crisis and preserve the economy.

He reviewed the government support package and thankfully he predicts an economic recovery.

Beating the odds with SME loving co-founder of Renatus Capital, Mark Flood

September 9, 2019

Boojum

I just love chatting to people, which is what prompted me to start podcasting in the first place..

It wasn’t any great desire to become a “star” behind the microphone but it was a desire to capture some of the interesting chats that I have with interesting people about their lives and their careers and yes I do lock all of this into a theme of “Win Happy”, which for me is all about people hopefully finding happiness in their lives as they go about chasing their dreams.

In this episode I chatted with the co-founder of Renatus Capital, Mark Flood.

I first met Mark a few years back for a coffee at the cafe in the beautiful National Art Gallery in Dublin on Clare Street – we had met initially through a networking event at Dublin Chamber of Commerce, which prompted a cuppa!

I was really impressed by this sharp, very driven young man as he was telling me about this new equity finance company, Renatus Capital he had just co-founded with his old boss from BDO, Brendan Traynor.

Mark Flood - Renatus Capital

You just knew that Mark, raised on a horse farm in Meath after numerous roles including managing the Racing Post in Ireland was just itching to finally “do his own thing” – he is an entrepreneur through and through, which probably came from watching his dad literally horse trading all of those years ago.

What I really loved about Mark and what they are doing at Renatus is that they have a very sharp focus and criteria about the companies they support and their involvement with them, which is very full-on. Everyone involved in each investment is really “in the game” and when this happens you have every chance of success.

This is proving to be a winning recipe for success, which can be seen from their three key equity investments to date with Boojum, Simtech and Rennicks.

Mark, while loving every minute of his work with this busy, busy business has to do some inevitable and very delicate juggling of that valuable finite commodity, his time, as he also has a young family.

Every entrepreneur knows that success doesn’t happen without you giving your projects everything and unfortunately this always comes at a personal cost and we need to carefully weigh up all of this as we try to ‘Win’ but more importantly Win Happy!

I wish Mark and the Renatus team the best of luck in their quest..

Click here to listen to my chat with Mark and the fantastic work that they are doing at Renatus Capital.

Enjoy the show!

Connecting Head and Heart with Catherine Moroney, AIB

July 1, 2018

Catherine Moroney - AIB

A good buddy of mine and fellow Dublin Chamber Council member is Catherine Moroney. who also happens to be the Head of Business Banking with AIB,

I grabbed her recently for an episode of the Fuzion Win Happy podcast – I’ve been intrigued by her as she is very lovely and has clearly risen to the top of the career tree in AIB, as she holds down one of the most senior roles at the bank (how can you be so “nice” and still successful? – a fantastic role model).

How exactly did this family woman rise to the top, what was her magic?

I discovered a very interesting background as this self declared “cone head” shared stories about Paddy, her dad, about her early days growing up in Dublin, part time work in a hospital for patients with long term illness and switching from studying Archaeology in college to a job in banking!!

I pushed her hard about what it was like personally and professionally working in the bank throughout the highs of the Celtic Tiger and the colossal crash, we chatted about how the bank is handling diversity, how it is helping customers prepare for the uncertainty of Brexit and the challenge of introducing technology and not losing that connection with customers in the process.

Catherine also shares a very personal, life changing story that will shake you to your core – I’m not sure how I would cope with what she had to deal with.

Click here to listen to the show and get to know Catherine..

Enjoy…

Embracing the Darkness with Jim Breen, founder of Cycle Against Suicide

June 6, 2018

Jim Breen

A number of years ago we bumped into successful businessman, Jim Breen (founder of PulseLearning) and star of the TV show ‘Secret Millionaire‘ at an event in Cork.

Jim was speaking at this event and he lit up the atmosphere with his dynamic, challenging, energetic style.

At the coffee break we ended up chatting to him and he “quietly” mentioned to us that he had an idea about a cycle event that he wanted to take on tour around Ireland to shine a light on mental illness.

Men in particular, are really bad at talking face to face with each other about their struggles, but ‘shoulder to shoulder’ they can be much more open” he explained.

This was why he felt a cycling event would be a great vehicle for his message.

We offered to help him and two weeks later ‘Cycle Against Suicide‘ had been born and Fuzion created the brand identity, website and communications campaign to go with his powerful concept.

Since then Cycle Against Suicide has been a huge success and thankfully there has been a reduction in the cruel statistics, which are still way too high.

Jim has become a very close friend and he agreed to jump in and do a podcast with us where he takes us on a deep trip into the darkness of mental illness.

In this very open and honest chat, Jim shares his successful and inspirational story as well as his personal struggles with his own darkness, how he copes with this everyday and how he has turned this darkness into a unique strength.

A sincere thank you to Jim for giving us this insight into what it is like to live with Mental Illness.

It’s ok not to be ok, and it’s absolutely ok to ask for help

Tiny thing, huge thing

June 1, 2016

Team bonding

This was a tiny thing..

It was a busy day and I just finished a great social media session with a client. As per usual it went on longer than planned as we really got deep into the strategy and explored exactly how far we could change the public perception of their company by using social media in a clever way.

Jonathan was the only one left in the office and he told me that the presentation for the prospect we were meeting the following day was done. I asked him to press print on two copies as it would save me a little job the following day.

While I was tidying up the meeting room I spotted Jonathan at the binder and he was binding up the presentations for me.

There’s no need to do that

Not a bother, what else would I be doing” he answered.

That wasn’t true – it was a gorgeous evening and he had a family to get home to.

Jonathan is our Creative Director, our head of design and without a word he jumped in to do this tiny thing for me.

At Fuzion we talk about having a Win Happy ethos. Helping and supporting each other is a big part of this.

What he did for me wasn’t a tiny thing, it was a huge thing – thanks Jonathan!

Can Win Happy work?

June 23, 2013

Fuzion team

It was a gorgeous summer Saturday in Cork and I was strolling around the city with Dee and my two kids.

Everyone was in great form and I knew I should have been but I was miserable and my head was bursting – work was killing me. I had been caught in the middle of a corporate crossfire for over two years between the joint owners and unfortunately this was a no win situation for me.

I was the General Manager and I could have had an easy life if I toed the line, kept my head down, settled for the status quo, played the politics and enjoyed the benefits. This wasn’t me ….I was miserable!

On that Saturday afternoon, 10 years ago I decided I was handing in my notice (handing back my new Saab and turning my back on a hefty salary) and it was the day Win Happy was born.

Win Happy

Fuzion teamThis has been my goal ever since – never again did I want to spend a minute feeling miserable about my work.

It is really important to me that happiness is at the heart of what I do every single day.

Happiness for me is working in a place that I love, doing work that I enjoy, with great people and for clients that I respect.

Utopia?

I guess in a way it is Utopian but why not have that as a goal?

I will be the first to admit that it isn’t always that way but mostly we get pretty close.

Happy..

I do love what I do (except for some horrible admin work every now and then), we work for who we want (we don’t answer to any head office or anything like that, we can accept or even reject work if we choose) and we have carefully chosen a group of really good people to work with.

Every Friday we break bread together as part of a sacred lunch routine we have, which we call Fuzion Friday.

I believe that if you get all of that right you end up with an atmosphere that creates the perfect conditions for great work ..for winning.

Win?

Kerrie & DeeHappy is the first part of my philosophy. I am very driven and while I am not motivated by money I do want to be successful in our profession and this is where the satisfaction from Winning comes into it.

We work extremely hard and we keep ourselves up to date with trends and developments. We carefully choose talented people for our team and we make sure they understand the Fuzion way.

Together we work hard to get results for our clients even if this means us doing more than we are contracted for.

If a talented team, in a happy environment, work hard for clients then you should get lots of wins. Winning leads to more business – simple!

This philosophy has stood us well since the business started and in the 10 years that I have been with Fuzion we have continued to grow our business and our team, mostly with a smile.

#WinHappy
