Moving into Wisdom with Kevin Fahey, CEO of Essence of Leadership

March 18, 2025

Essence of Leadership - Kevin Fahey

Recently I have had the pleasure of meeting (virtually!) and doing some business with a very wise man, Kevin Fahey.

Each and every time we would have a chat he would leave me with some pearls of wisdom and when I learnt that this positive, always pushing forward, optimistic businessman was 75 I just had to ask him to come on my podcast.

Kevin is the CEO and Founder of Peer to Peer coaching company, Essence of Leadership.

Kevin came from a family farm, he went into the Irish clothing manufacturing industry and after a board room battle he found himself at home, unemployed.

Never a man to stand still Kevin started off a successful training company and was once labelled a Positive Psychopath by one of his clients. Like so many other businesses the recession that followed the Celtic Tiger crash, had him once again wondering where the next few bob was going to come from.

He talks about very dark days and struggling at times to lift himself from the bed in the morning, but he did, one foot at a time.

Kevin reinvented himself, and with all of his collective wisdom and experience he remodelled his business following the simple principle that often the wisdom that we are searching for actually sits within us. He explains why and how peer to peer coaching is so powerful, in particular for business owners and senior managers.

As I have been very recently grappling with a big birthday number, we also chatted about ageism and moving into “wisdom” and based on his energy and drive I think I am just a young fella still!

Kevin talks so much sense and I hope you can take the time to listen to our chat – you will be better for it, I promise.

PRIDE and the motivation behind picking up other people’s rubbish with Tom Butler, Ballincollig Tidy Towns

September 15, 2019

Ballincollig Tidy Towns

I’m always blown away when I bump into Ballincollig Tidy Towns volunteers up early on a Sunday morning as we head to the Regional Park to walk our two dogs, Honey and Bert.

Normally it is a person working diligently by themselves with their litter picker and their black bag. I always make a point of saying “hello” to them and saying “thank you”.

I quietly ask myself the question…. “What could possibly motivate you to get up on a Sunday morning and voluntarily start picking up other people’s rubbish and tidying up our town?

Our downtime is precious, time to rest, time to do our own chores, spend time with family and friends and to enjoy our hobbies, whatever they might be. As for these people, well, how do you explain it?

I was delighted to have the chance to finally chat with Tom Butler, a friend from back in the day who has been Chairperson of Ballincollig Tidy Towns for the last 20 years and ask him this very question.

To try to understand, I asked Tom about the influences in his life, lessons learnt from his scouting days, lessons from his dad, Jim, and what drives him to do what he does each day. He explained how he got involved and the incredible difference the awards have made to towns and villages all over Ireland.

Why does Tom do what he does? – it’s simple, it’s all about Pride.

A huge thanks to Tom Butler and the team in Ballincollig Tidy Towns for making our place so special.

Enjoy the show!

Embracing the Darkness with Jim Breen, founder of Cycle Against Suicide

June 6, 2018

Jim Breen

A number of years ago we bumped into successful businessman, Jim Breen (founder of PulseLearning) and star of the TV show ‘Secret Millionaire‘ at an event in Cork.

Jim was speaking at this event and he lit up the atmosphere with his dynamic, challenging, energetic style.

At the coffee break we ended up chatting to him and he “quietly” mentioned to us that he had an idea about a cycle event that he wanted to take on tour around Ireland to shine a light on mental illness.

Men in particular, are really bad at talking face to face with each other about their struggles, but ‘shoulder to shoulder’ they can be much more open” he explained.

This was why he felt a cycling event would be a great vehicle for his message.

We offered to help him and two weeks later ‘Cycle Against Suicide‘ had been born and Fuzion created the brand identity, website and communications campaign to go with his powerful concept.

Since then Cycle Against Suicide has been a huge success and thankfully there has been a reduction in the cruel statistics, which are still way too high.

Jim has become a very close friend and he agreed to jump in and do a podcast with us where he takes us on a deep trip into the darkness of mental illness.

In this very open and honest chat, Jim shares his successful and inspirational story as well as his personal struggles with his own darkness, how he copes with this everyday and how he has turned this darkness into a unique strength.

A sincere thank you to Jim for giving us this insight into what it is like to live with Mental Illness.

It’s ok not to be ok, and it’s absolutely ok to ask for help
